VIDEO: House passes gay marriage bill

After a three-hour debate, the Maine House approved a same-sex marriage bill.

The House at 1:47 p.m. enacted a bill allowing gay marriages in Maine by a vote of 89-57. The bill, LD 1020, was sent back to the Senate, which gave it preliminary approval last week and is scheduled to give it final approval on Wednesday. It would then send it to Gov. John Baldacci for his signature.

The proposal would make Maine the fifth state to allow gay marriage. But it's unclear whether Baldacci would sign the bill. Baldacci remains undecided.

Four states now allow same-sex marriages: Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa by court orders and Vermont through legislation. New Hampshire's Legislature is actively considering a gay marriage bill.

The Maine House has begun floor debate of a same-sex marriage bill approved by the state Senate last week.

House Speaker Hannah Pingree says it's her goal to put the bill up for votes by day's end and send the bill back to the Senate for final approval.

The proposal would make Maine the fifth state to allow gay marriage, and supporters are confident of the bill's prospects because it has 50-plus sponsors. But it's unclear whether Gov. John Baldacci would sign the bill. Baldacci remains undecided.

AUGUSTA—The House of Representatives plans to take up a bill this morning that would legalize gay marriage.

The bill passed with initial votes in the Senate last week, and it was sent to the House. The House is expected to pass the bill. Lawmakers must make several votes on LD 1020, and it may go beyond today.

If passed, it would be sent back to the Senate, which would vote whether or not to enact it and then send it to Gov. John Baldacci. Baldacci has opposed gay marriage in the past, but has said recently he is keeping an open mind.

If Baldacci gets LD 1020, he can sign it into law, veto it or allow it to become law without his signature.

If passed, opponents of gay marriage have said they will launch a peoples’ veto effort, to ask voters to repeal the law in November.

In my opinion this bill is

In my opinion this bill is ok. Everybody has the right to chose his sex partners. If a guy interested on a guy thats not a problem at all. And the have the right to marriage. But there may be some problems as these may destroy the social system. toronto website design

Im gonna string up!

Im gonna string up!

Maine makes history. Again.

Maine makes history. Again. As it should be. What a great and proud day this is. I was at the State House today and will remember this moment for my entire life.

Yes, Marcus, we can see how

Yes, Marcus, we can see how much it's 'backlashing' all over the country, especially in
New England. (NOT!)

My biggest fear at this point is that the New Hamphire governor will sign their bill
before Baldacci signs ours! This leaves only Rhode Island left to fall into place.

Go, JOHN, Go!!

The more I think about this

The more I think about this the more I love Miss California who has been beaten up by the gay folks for her personal beliefs.

All the gays are jumping for

All the gays are jumping for joy and celebrating, the celebration will be short lived. This will go the voters and well you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out from there, the law will be overturned. The silent majority will get out and vote. It is just a matter of time.

I am glad to see that OUR law

I am glad to see that OUR law makers are working on the IMPORTANT issues!! The economy is in crisis,
and we are debating gay marriage. Maine should be shamed of itself. We don't have to follow other states
that have approved this. This is going to create a backslash against gays, and the law maker that support them.
Gays already have rights in Maine, and don't need special rights. If the vocal minority continues to try and shove
this immorality down our throats this will backfire. Yet again the people of Maine WILL veto this in a statewide vote
just as they have done numerous times. If the govenor has any back bone left he will veto this and not cave to the
vocal minority.

Marcus35, many of your

Marcus35, many of your statements worry me immensely.
First of all, who's to say that the civil rights of a minority are not IMPORTANT issues? Would you agree with that for people in the 60s who were fighting for African-American rights...were those issues also not "important" enough? What about slavery, Marcus? Was it not "important" enough to free an entire race from slavery through a war?
And since when is allowing homosexuals the right to marry a "special" right? You're implying that this is a right granted only to them, but that's completely false. This bill will simply give them the SAME rights we, as heterosexuals, enjoy today. WE'RE the ones with the special rights, Marcus, not them. Maybe if you put aside that hate you would be able to see that this issue is only about love and equality.

Congratulations to the Maine

Congratulations to the Maine House of Representatives! I didn't know you had it in you to do the right, ethical and moral thing! For those of you who are so very frightened by the spectre of same sex couples exchanging vows and rings, all I can say is if you don't espouse gay marriage, don't marry one! By the way, if the Governor signs the bill, then lookit all the $$$ the Church of Latter Day Saints and other homophobic religious groups will be sending to Maine, buying time on the Media to get their 'message' out. It's a win/win. Should there be enough signatures to force a referendum, the mere fact we can all agree we don't want flatlanders telling us what to do ought to defeat the referendum.

2dogsinheat (nice name, by

2dogsinheat (nice name, by the way): I really hope you don't believe that nonsense you just wrote. This was the big problem with Proposition 8: false advertisement. The people of California were told that a) priests would be obligated to marry same-sex couples and b) homosexuality would now be promoted and taught to children. Neither of which was true. Homosexuals are not perverts. In fact, the majority of child molesters are heterosexual, white males. All they want is to be able to live out their private lives in peace, like every other law-abiding citizen in America. Please grow up and get rid of your unfounded prejudices.

Sure ! and several years ago

Sure ! and several years ago Mainers were told that homosexuals did not need gay marraige. Once this is passed, they will be back to the table looking to expand on any and all means to push this decrepid lifestyle onto any group of people they can do it to.

Thanks to the House for doing

Thanks to the House for doing the right thing & taking a stand for equality. Let's hope the governor does so too.

Fortunately for you, this

Fortunately for you, this will become law whether the governor signs it or not.  However, it will have to overcome the people's veto.

Hopefully the voters will do

Hopefully the voters will do the right thing too in a vote (otherwise the judiciary may have to enforce the equal rights which are a basis of our Constitution). This bill gives gays the right to a CIVIL marriage. Churches will have the right to allow gay marriage or not depending upon their beliefs. Some churches will allow it; others will not. But no one church has the right to dictate what the state is allowed to do and what other churches are allowed to do based upon that one church's beliefs. As a straight, married, middle-aged woman, I am so ready for Maine to move beyond discrimination and a message of intolerance wrapped in the guise of a "loving religion."

And if the majority get to

And if the majority get to vote on the rights of the minority, hopefully they will dp the right thing too (or the judiciary may well have to enforce the equal rights which are the basis of our Constitution). This bill gives gays the right to a CIVIL marriage. Churches can still marry according to their beliefs--some churches will allow gay marriages, others will not. But the beliefs of any individual church should not dictate civil rights nor the rights of other churches. As a straight married woman, I am so ready for Maine to move beyond discrimination and a message of intolerance wrapped in the guise of a "loving religion."

want to save straight

want to save straight marriage...ban divorce and see how that works
look at all the "less government " people work to impose a more government ban on gay marriage.
as far a sin goes; show where in the bible does it say "let he without sin cast the first stone" and who said it?
otherwise gay marriage passed, big woop

Please.... I continue to wait

Please.... I continue to wait for someone to tell me how two loving persons in a committed relationship getting married destroys marriage. I previously wrote that my wife and I will not divorce and I will not begin dating my auto mechanic if gay persons are allowed to marry! I stand by this statement no matter what the lunatic fringe says.

I am neither a redneck nor a

I am neither a redneck nor a fool.
I didn't choose to be gay.
Same-sex traditions predate Christianity by thousands of years.
I am a middle class gay man, married to my partner of 36 years; I espouse middle-class values.
I am a Christian.
Minding one's own business USED to be considered a Yankee VIRTUE.

Thank goodness for people's

Thank goodness for people's veto.

Minority rights should never

Minority rights should never be submitted to a popular plebiscite ... that's what the Bill of Rights is all ABOUT: protecting minorities agains "the tyranny of the majority" in a pure democracy ... which we're NOT, BTW; we're a Representative Republic.

I'm willing to wager you'd

I'm willing to wager you'd not feel that way if Congress had shot this bill down.  That's fine.  I'm comfortable with the fact that we DO have the right to have issues go to the general public.  This is especially useful if our elected officials are not listening to the will of the people.  And yes, I'm well aware that we live in a Republic, thanks :)

YES!! We have taken "your"

YES!! We have taken "your" marriage, re-defined it, and made it OURS too!
:)

GOD isn't a loser; just some of His/Her FOLLOWERS.

woooo hoooo. We are very

woooo hoooo. We are very thankful to everyone who made this important step in equal rights for all happen in our glorious state.

allowing single sex couples to marry in the state will benefit small businesses across the state by directly affecting their pocketbooks. Increased tourism, increased rental income, increased revenues for inns, florists, caterers, and gift shops. This is fantastic.

What will be a complete waste of money will be what is spent by the anti-marriage people from out of state. $60 million alone in California...how much will be spent in Maine to take away equal rights for all people. What a shame and how misguided!

Thanks again everyone!

if it doesn't bring the money

if it doesn't bring the money into the state, just like they say, I say it should be put back to the normal way and never be spoken again

Well, The lines have been

Well,

The lines have been drawn, and the sad part is that once more, the citizens will have to take to the referendum to smack down the idiots in the legislature that simply will not listen to the voters.

We do NOT need special laws for folks who place their lifestyle choices over the laws, traditions, and values of the citizens.

Hopefully, this governor will honor his promise to veto this bill.

1. I didn't choose to be gay,

1. I didn't choose to be gay, any more than I chose to be right-handed.
2. Sodomy has been legal throughout the USA since Lawrence et al. v. Texas (1993)

Please show us were the Bible tells us that living and sleeping with the same sex is a christian value

1. It's not a lifestyle

1. It's not a lifestyle choice. We didn't choose to be gay, any more than you chose to be right-handed.
2. Sodomy has been legal in the United States since Lawrence et al. v. Texas in 1993.
3. Same-sex traditions are older than Christianity. And indeed, if you read Same-Sex Unions in Pre-Modern Europe and Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality, both by the late Dr. John Boswell, you will discover that Christianity wasn't always homophobic either.
4. I am a Christian; I am gay; I am legally married to my partner of 36 years. I espouse the same middle-class values as my non-gay counterparts.
5. I am also a citizen. I pay taxes; I vote; I engage in the political process.
How DARE you propose to take away MY self-evident rights under the Constitution? How DARE you propose to impose YOUR religion and YOUR values upon ME?
By all means let's protect heterosexual marriage ... by making fornication, adultery, and divorce DEATH-PENALTY offenses. THAT'S biblical (see the Code of Leviticus for details).
No takers? No surprise THERE! Fundamentalists are such hypocrites.

by making fornication,

by making fornication, adultery, and divorce DEATH-PENALTY offenses

As well as Ho-mo- sex-ualiy

This is not a special law.

This is not a special law. This will law allow all loving couples to eneter in a legally binding union, regardless of sexual orientation. That is not 'special' it just gives others the same rights you have.
The legislators have listened to their constituents, and a majority found that most Mainers do support fairness and equallity under the law.
The governor has NOT promised to veto this bill. He is still on the fence, but my bet is that he will sign it, since it passed both chambers so overwhelmingly.

Hurray! This is not about

Hurray! This is not about religion or changing anyone's particular view of morals. It is about fairness to many families and law-abiding citizens. I am glad for this day and pray for the final steps to go smoothly.

How do you destroy marriage by allowing more people to enter into it?? Is your marriage that weak that it will be destroyed if two men or two women wed?? Show me one case of a destroyed marriage in any state or country that allows same sex marriage??
The only thing that destroys marriage is divorce. Period.

thanks jack,  you are right

thanks jack,  you are right on the money.  you want to save straight marriage ban divorce and see how that works....  otherwise gay marriage passes...big woop
