BANGOR -- A regulatory board has unanimously approved a development with two resorts and more than 2,000 housing units in Maine's Moosehead Lake area. Critics say the decision threatens the character of the North Woods made famous by Henry David Thoreau.

The Land Use Regulation Commission today approved Plum Creek Timber Co.'s proposal, nearly five years after the Seattle-based company announced plans for the largest residential development ever in Maine.

But the vote won't put an end to the process. Plum Creek would face additional approvals before construction, and opponents said they intend to file a lawsuit to stop the development.

Prior to the vote, police arrested several protesters who disrupted the meeting, yelled at board members and accused them of selling out.

The plan under consideration would allow Plum Creek to develop 821 homes, as well as resorts with 800 housing units at Big Moose Mountain and another 404 at Lilly Bay.

The people in Greenville must be dancing in the streets.  I look forward to patronizing one of these resorts one day.  I love that area and I go up there when I can.  It will certainly enhance the area and help the local people there which is the most important thing.  Unlike some I think people are more important than trees.  The mid-coast couldn't be happier for Moosehead!

My grandfather was logging in the Greenville area since the 1920's and we still will be using this 'working' forest for hundreds of more years.

This area has never been a "pristine" forest nor a "wilderness" forest since before the 1800s and was in fact a resort destination since the 1840's, the day trips of Thoreau who too penned it as a wilderness but was incorrect in his observations, when actually more huning and fising took place and when more tourist for recreation like canoeing, hiking, etc., came to Greenvile then than in the past 30 years. One camp called Wilsons, that I think is still in existence, had 40 guides working out of just this one camp and you can see pictures of hunters with hundreds of deer, hundreds of trout,taken for many years prior to regulations then.

I can't believe that this comment comes from someone who has actually ever been there.  The north woods are vast and this development won't do anything that isn't already being done.  The area is developed now.  My gosh I was on the golden road a few months ago and when I stopped to view Katahdin I counted almost 30 cars in five minutes.  Most of them were from out of state.  The north woods has already changed in many ways but it is also so huge that this isn't going to change it to the point of ruin.  The economy of that area hovers at ruin a lot of the time anyway.  Thanks to 40 years of democrat control a lot of the solid business up there is already gone.  Dexter shoe is history and the mill is closed.  The wood harvested goes to Canada.  Democrats have destroyed this state.  The new economy for Maine are service jobs.  It is our fault.  We voted these buffoons in over and over and they made Maine the most business unfriendly state in the nation and gave us the highest tax burden per capita.  We should thank our lucky souls that someone still wants to build here.  We are in serius danger of falling into the same economic stagnation that Vermont is in.

Of course they are Obama supporters.  I would be willing to bet on it and I can imagine I wouldn't get many takers.  Everyone knows they are part of the left wing fringe that Obama himself is part of. 

This form of protest just shows that these kind of people simply have no respect for others and their thoughts.  It isn't about giving a little and being somewhere in the middle.  It isn't even about accepting that things don't always go your way (see being a responsible citizen).  It is the spoiled rotton attitude that some poor little rich kid would have.  My way, my way!  They just can't accept anything less than everything they want.  Compromise is fine for them as long as it is someone else doing it.  They are just a bunch of filled diaper whiney little brats.  I would love to get right in their face and tell them so.  I am glad they got arrested and I hope the judge won't go easy on them or let them off with nothing they way they usually do with protestors in Maine. 

Can you imagine doing the hard work this panel has done and the level of personal sacrifice and scrutiny simply to have these losers come yell in your face.  Of course we must realize that the reason they did it is to try and scare the panel into voting their way.  They have nothing left but to basically bully people.  What a bunch of jerks.  Why no security?  Didn't they even consider that this could happen?  Seems very naive in this situation. 

On some of the local TV stations I have seen some of their activist videos and protests over the last few years.  You should see this bunch.  What a mess.  They look like a bunch of total degenerates.  I can't imagine what kind of job you can get when you choose to look like a bum and whats more who is going to take you seriously.  The mixed group I was with when they came on TV did nothing but make fun of them and most of them hadn't even made up their mind on this project.  A few were convinced that if if this group was against it they must be for it.  Oh well I have ranted enough.

The protestors just cannot understand and live with it- it went through the process, everyone heard both sides and the arguements.  It's decision time!  And, more than likely it won't be perfect but something everyone can live with.  The protestors need to learn to live with it not have (or not have it the way they desire) and act like lunatics!  I hope the Equality people can live with it too.  Mav.
