Update: 2nd gay marriage opponent threatened

AUGUSTA -- Police are investigating a pair of threats against gay marriage opponents in Maine.

Marc Mutty from Stand for Marriage Maine says a threatening voicemail message was discovered this morning at campaign headquarters in which a female caller said, "You will be dead. Maybe not today, not tomorrow. But soon you'll dead." Police in Yarmouth are investigating.

Augusta police say a separate voicemail threat targeted Michael Heath, former leader of the Christian Civic League of Maine and its successor, the Maine Family Policy Council. Heath wasn't actively involved in the gay marriage campaign, but he fought against a gay rights law in campaigns in 1998, 2000 and 2005.

The incident following voters' decision last week to scuttle Maine's gay marriage law. Mutty says the campaign is taking the threats seriously.

AUGUSTA -- Police are investigating a threat against a leader in past efforts against gay rights in Maine.

Augusta police say the voicemail threat targeted Michael Heath, former leader of the Christian Civic League of Maine and its successor, the Maine Family Policy Council. The person who left the voicemail said, "I can tell him this. I'm a gay guy who owns guns, and he's my next target."

The incident isn't the only backlash following voters' decision to scuttle Maine's gay marriage law.

On Sunday, same-sex marriage supporters protested outside the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. WGME-TV says protesters taped their mouths shut in the silent protest. Bishop Richard Malone had urged Catholics to reject gay marriage.

JST, either I misread the first article today or they clarified it. When I first read it, I thought it was the one from last week, about Michael Heath. Only this evening, re-reading it, did I discover it was about Marc Mutty.

I would believe Marc Mutty. Not the Christian Civil League. They are unethical and uncredible. Marc Mutty, as much as I dislike what he's done, I don't have the sense that he would lie about something like this. The Christian Civic League would do anything for any reason. But I just don't get the same 'take' on Mutty.

The first story about Michael Heath could have triggered someone with loose control over their impulses to call Mutty. I still don't believe the Heath story, although I'm not as certain as I was when I first read it.

There is no call, no reason and no acceptable excuse for death threats. It's wrong. And there are no two sides to it. Period!

What rehash from what article last week? I read everyday and didn't see this article last week anytime. Seems like a legitimately new story about a couple guys being left threatening voicemails.

I read all the time comments from people complaining how bad this paper is, but I have to tell you, it is one of the most balanced papers I have read. The stories are well written for the most part and reasonably balanced considering how conservative the leadership is there. I don't understand why people in Maine always talk about gay marriage. From my understanding it's a law to allow same sex people to get married. Since the law is about benefits one gets by being married rather than being single will allow millions of not gay people to get married as same sex marrage means better health benefits, better income tax benefits, etc. As far as gay marrage goes, does the State of Maine have a blood test that proves you are gay? I don't understand. This was in the paper last week, why is it there again? On the day it ran, hard copy, it was placed on the last page of the Local section. Where is it today in hard copy? (not being snarky - haven't seen a paper yet). Is it more prominently displayed?

Maybe Heath didn't get enough recognition from the first one because it was buried deep in the paper?

And quite frankly, I don't equate a supposed (I don't believe that's true) death threat with people protesting in a peaceful manner.
