Unum is eliminating some Portland-based jobs, a company official confirmed today, as part of “normal fluctuations in employment levels.” Jim Sabourin, vice president of corporate communications, would not give any specific numbers of job cuts, but said the “overall percentage is very small.” And the company is hiring in other business areas, he added. Unum, an insurance company formed from the merger of Portland-based Unum Corp. and Provident Corp., is the country’s largest provider of disability insurance. It also is one of southern Maine’s biggest employers, with about 3,100 workers in greater Portland. The firm is headquartered in Chattanooga, Tenn., and has about 10,500 employees total.
