UMA plans videoconference classrooms

AUGUSTA -- At least three University of Maine at Augusta classrooms will gain videoconferencing capabilities by winter, a move that could help the college broadcast more classes to students across Maine.

The 5,000-student college will take advantage of federal economic stimulus funds it received in June to update the classrooms in Augusta, said Sheri Stevens, UMA's vice president for administration.

As part of the same project, college officials have plans to update classrooms at UMA’s Bangor campus. And workers are putting the finishing touches on a videoconferencing installation at a remote learning center in Rockland, Stevens said.

Preliminary estimates put the cost of the project at $100,000, she said.

"It gives that much-improved interaction between students and people sitting in different spaces around the state," Stevens said.
