SKOWHEGAN — Thrill seekers, animal lovers, and those whose curiosity is piqued by the unusual flocked to the Skowhegan State Fair Thursday for opening day.
Thousands packed the midway under sunny skies for the 191st edition of the fair, which offers 10 days of everything from carnival rides to agricultural exhibits.
As usual, oddities also are promised — the tiniest horses alive, a giant turtle, a humongus pig and two towering giraffes under a tent.
“This is wonderful,” said Susan MacKenzie of Vassalboro, as she fed a giraffe a piece of carrot. “A lot of people may not have seen them.”
MacKenzie, 57, said she came to the fair Thursday just to see the giraffes, whose tongues fluttered and curled as they snatched up tidbits fed to them by fairgoers.
“I’ve fed giraffes before at Busch Gardens but these seem bigger for some reason,” MacKenzie said. “I like animals but giraffes are one of my favorites. They certainly are different-looking. I just love it. I could stay here all day.”
The aroma of French fries, fried dough, hot dogs and sausage wafted across the midway as people munched, nibbled and slurped down icy drinks. Many treated themselves to cotton candy and candied apples.
“She calls it ‘candy cotton,’” Sue Carter of Skowhegan said of her daughter, Riley, 3, who skipped along the midway.
The Carters were catching bubbles that trinket vendor Gary Houston was shooting from a “bubble gun.”
Sue Carter said this was her second time at the fair.
“I just moved here from Massachusetts last year,” she said. “I love the fair. I think it’s great. I have a whole house full of people — all my family — who came from Massachussets and New Hampshire, just for the fair.”
A curious phenomenon was occurring at opposite ends of the midway — two separate exhibits claiming to have the smallest horse alive. On the west end, the smallest horse was 26 inches high, according to a sign drawing people in. For $1 you could look into a pen where the tiny gray and white horse munched on hay.
Kelly Curtin, 14, her sister, Sammi, 13, and their friend, Leah Clark, 14, snapped photos of the little horse, named “Tiny Tim.”
The girls, from New Canaan, Conn., were visiting the fair from Waterville, where their brothers were playing in a baseball tournament, they said.
“I usually ride big horses, so it’s kind of weird to see how tiny they can actually be,” Kelly said.
Her sister, Sammi, was mesmerized.
“Imagine how small that saddle would be,” she said.
At the opposite end of the midway, near the grandstand, was another miniature horse, advertised as 22 inches high and the smallest horse alive.
For $1, you could enter a little tent and see the plump brown horse standing on a bed of sawdust, also munching hay.
Belinda Gould of Hartland reached over the fence to try to get its attention.
“Hi Baby,” she said. “I had one just a little bit bigger than this one when I was a kid. I love animals.”
Gould, 48, and her daughter, Christena Dow, 31, had little success getting the horse to look up.
“You are a stubborn little thing,” Gould said. “By the looks of your belly I don’t think you’re too hungry. I think this is just your way of ignoring the world.”
Michelle and Cory Porter and their three children were checking out an extremely large pig in the next tent.
“This is as big as our pig,” said Michelle Porter. I wonder if it’s as mean?”
Other fairgoers gaped at a gigantic turtle in a nearby tent.
Temperatures were in the 80s but there was a wind on the midway to cool things down. At mid-afternoon it was pretty cool in the air-conditioned fair office, where Fair President Tom Dillon and Vice President Mel Blaisdell stopped briefly. They said they were pleased with the opening day turnout, particularly because in recent years, rain had hurt attendance.
“I’m quite sure by the looks right now that by evening it should be quite full,” Dillon said of attendance.
Opening day featured $1 admission to the fair and $1 for each ride, which no doubt boosted admissions. And the weather promises to be good for several days.
“I think we’ll have a good week,” Dillon said. Blaisdell concurred.
“It should be great,” he said.
The fair gates open at 7 a.m. Friday, with midway rides starting at noon. Tractor pull trials and a steer and auction show begin at 9 a.m.; a tractor pull and the antique power show open at 10 a.m.; and exhibition halls open at 11 a.m. A Longaberger basket-making demonstration and retired product sale kick off at noon followed by a 1 p.m. tractor pull.
Hollywood racing pigs perform at 2 p.m., along with another basket-making demo; Circus Hollywood is at 3:30 p.m.; and at 4 p.m., keyboard music with Chet Lonn is featured. Racing pigs perform again at 5:30 p.m.; tractor pull, circus and Longaberger product demo, 7 p.m.; and the demolition derby starts at 7:30 p.m.
