Report: Keep Maine forests vibrant

AUGUSTA — A new report on the future of Maine's forests recommends preservation of resources, air and water quality while maintaining a stable or increasing flow of wood fiber.

The report was presented Thursday to Gov. John Baldacci by Bruce Wiersma, former dean of the University of Maine College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture. It is the product of 18 months of work by 20 forest stakeholders.

Baldacci says the report recognizes the importance of the health, vitality and significance of Maine's forests to Maine people and the economy. It says new models for conservation should be explored that build on existing partnerships.

The report is the product of work by landowners, mill owners, loggers, conservation groups and public agencies.

By expanding Maine's forests

By expanding Maine's forests and wetlands, it can eliminate our carbon footprint; and perhaps earn the State revenue as a carbon credit exporter.

Foreste were recommended in the original KYOTO report as the 'best way' to remove CO2 and sequester carbon.
