Pingrees tout bill to promote kid-safe products

AUGUSTA -- U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree says she's eager to work on federal legislation modeled after a year-old Maine law intended to rid children's toys of toxic chemicals.

The Kid-Safe Products Law was sponsored by the congresswoman's daughter, House Speaker Hannah Pingree, who joined her mother today at the State House to promote efforts to run out a national version.

Supporters of the law hailed the event as an early Mother's Day gift to Chellie Pingree from her daughter on behalf of the children of Maine.

The law provides a process to identify potentially dangerous chemicals so they can no longer be used in children's products.
