Noncandidate Finch wins seat

FAIRFIELD - Despite delcaring two weeks ago the he was no longer a candidate, Ed Finch finished second Tuesday in a five-way race for two positions on the town council.

Donald Giroux Sr.  will be back on the town council, having served 12 years in the 1970s and 1980s. Giroux got the most votes, 1,137, in a close race.

Finch, a state representative and member of the SAD 49 board, won 995 votes. Robert Sezak had 900 votes, followed by Bruce Harrington with 878 and Phil Roy with 770.

Town Clerk Tracey Stevens said today that Finch will resign as soon as the council convenes for its first meeting of 2010, on Jan. 4. The council then will appoint someone for a one-year term, Stevens said. Thought Sezak was next in the voting, the council is not obliged to appoint him, Stevens said.
