Man jumps from Augusta bridge

Authorities from several agencies are searching the Kennebec River, after a person reportedly jumped from the Calumet Bridge in Augusta late Wednesday night.

WGME-TV is reporting that passing motorists on the bridge around 11 p.m. saw a male standing beyond the safety railing of the bridge. Some tried to talk to him, but then he jumped.

A LifeFlight helicopter used its search lights on the river, the station says, as did a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard. The Maine Warden Service, Marine Patrol, State Police divers and the Augusta Police all responded.

The search is continuing this morning.

Police reportedly know the identity of the jumper.
