LEWISTON -- The 109-year-old St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lewiston is set to host its final mass.

On Tuesday, Bishop Richard Malone will officiate at the mass in the church that overlooks Kennedy Park.

The building is due to be closed on Wednesday. By Christmas, Maine's Roman Catholic Church is expected to finalize its decision to sell the brick church.

Monsignor Marc Caron tells the Lewiston Sun Journal it's painful for everybody.

Over time regular churchgoers saw the number of parishioners fall and collections slide.

On Oct. 13, Lewiston's oldest Catholic church, St. Joseph's, closed.

Facts are stubborn things. Look it up for yourself.

The church made a major mistake in the past, by admitting "gay but celebate" men into seminary. That developed into a large gay subculture withing the church, and MOST of the abuser-priests turned out to be gay.

The church has recongized its mistake, and since 2005 has explicitly forbidden active gays from entering seminary.

They had a big mess to clean up as a result of those past decisions, but hopefully have learned their lesson.

Perfect. The "stubborn" facts clearly show that the number of Catholics is not only going down, but also that their numbers are decreasing faster that all other religions as secularism grows.

An interesting addition fact is that immigrants are predominately Catholic and without the infusion of so many immigrants (especially Hispanics) the church's numbers would be dropping like a stone.

Glad to see one more Catholic Church bite the dust.Gee Tom i dont think that the Catholic Church Population is growing.If it was you would see no church closings.I am glad i have recoverd from the Catholic Church it was sure a mess and glad i found a way out.There is one thing the Catholic Church did for me and that was i found how to become an Atheist.I have never been happier. And Tom i hope someday you find your way out of the grips of the Catholic Church. or any other Church you may come in contact with.But i know some people can not let go of a flase God and a fable called the bible.

That would be nice if it was purely demography but it is actually closer to something almost demonic. If the priests could have kept their hands to themselves, and the hierarchy properly and promptly addressed it, there would not have been both the mass exodus and the inherent money issues within the church. Between the law suits and the lack of parishioner funding, it is no wonder they have needed to close churches, sell off property and combine parishes. The church needs to get up to speed with the times, allow women in this ancient boys club as well embracing marriage within its' ranks, to mention just a couple of long needed changes.

That's too bad, but it's demographic. In the US the Catholic population is increasing, while the liberal mainline religions are seeing membership dropping. Conservative evangelical churches are growing as well, in Maine and elsewhere. There are many people who are hungry for the word of God. But, for too many in Maine, they don't care to take the time. It is ironic that the number of people on welfare in Maine is one of the highest in the nation, while Maine church attendance is among the lowest.
