Maine businessman Les Otten plans to announce the creation of an exploratory committee to consider a run for governor, according to a statement sent out today.
According to the announcement, Otten will hold an event at 8:30 a.m. on June 29 at the Mariott Sable Oaks in South Portland.
Otten, of Bethel, is president of Maine Energy Systems, a company that installs heating systems and delivers wood pellets to homes. He is the former chairman of American Skiing Co., and a former minority owner of the Boston Red Sox.
His name has been tossed around as a potential gubernatorial contender in the past few election cycles, and he once considered a run for U.S. Senate. It’s expected he would run for governor as a Republican.
Others in the mix for the 2010 gubernatorial election include Steven Rowe, a Portland Democrat, former attorney general and former speaker of the Maine House of Representatives; Lynne Williams, former Green party chair; businessmen Matthew Jacobson of Portland, a Republican; and Bruce Poliquin of Georgetown, also a Republican.

Say It Ain't So...Les!!
You would probably be better off making snow in Bethel.
We don't need any more lame a*s*s politicians, and I'm
a Republican.
I wish Angus King would have
I wish Angus King would have shaved off that damn mustache!
Elmer Fudd moved from the
Elmer Fudd moved from the state 3 years ago. I believe Wile E. Coyote (super-genius...) is a resident, tho ....
Otten may be like Angus King
Otten may be like Angus King - he fills in a suit nicely, and he left a mess of his skiicompany like Angus left the State with a mess of a deficit gap. We need someone to do more than look good at a photo-op. Don't bother running as a Republican, Les, you are not one. Hey - another similarity to Angus - he ran as an Independent and was really a D. No shame in that but he should have fessed up all along.
Oh, good grief.
Oh, good grief.
Elmer Fudd would be a better
Elmer Fudd would be a better candidate than any of those named thus far. We do not need another candidate like the current governor and former dishwasher from Bangor.
If you'd ever had the chance
If you'd ever had the chance to work around Les, you'd know he was an innovator and a genuinely decent human being. I think he'd be an Angus King-type governor, and I'd like to see it happen, even if I am a lifelong Democrat. Maybe he should run as an independent....
He ran the ski Industry into
He ran the ski Industry into the ground , why not State Government?
Don't bother, Les...our next
Don't bother, Les...our next Governor will be a Democrat!
Don't waste your time Les.
Don't waste your time Les. You did a great job to the sking business that is ended up bellie down. The stat is on its way down with all those(can't use the word I want because they won't print it. You have been a failure in one business already andthe bellet business will be a failure in five years.
