It is time  all the schools formed a group to sue the Federal Government for more money to pay for all the mandates the Feds have made law.

Seems everyone has forgotten that Special Education is mandated and controlled by Federal Law.  No matter how much people want to control it at the state level, they can not.

If there is over identifying, it is because there are no clear cut off points regarding who is and who is not a student with a disability. Rather than go through an expensive law suit, many school districts will choose to identify a student as needing special education services if there's even a remote possibility a student has a disability that requires special education.In the end everyone making the decision wants what is best for the child.

Any area of cutting spending is on the table.  Cutting spending doesn't have to mean you actually get less.  How many times have any of us needed to buy something but just looked for the best price.  Well that is in a sense cutting spending.  Maybe you buy your gas or oil from company xyz next year because they are cheaper.  Again cutting spending.  Is the oil and gas worse?  Of course not.  You are just rewarding a company who is willing to be more efficient and deliver cost savings.  Education should go through the same process (as should health care). 

I also find it ironic that Gendron met with a bunch of six figure people to figure out how to cut costs.  I bet none of them mentioned cutting their own salary back down to just unreasonable and not outrageous. 

We need to revise the way we compensate teachers and other education staff if we are to return financial

sustainablility to our educational system. I have great respect for teachers and what they do. But

to continue a system where they need only work for 25 years and then retire on a full guarenteed pension and full

health benifits--something no-one other than government workers gets--is just not affordable. That type of

arrangement helped bring down GM. It will do the same for the state gov't if we don't change it.

Cause and effect. Cut education, kids don't learn or drop out. Then they don't get a job that pays enough to take care of themselves or their families. They apply for and get government assistant, thereby costing more then just giving them a good eduction.

It makes a great deal of sense to look for inefficiencies and non essential spending in education because it is both the largest area of state spending and the one growing the fastest in spite of steady or decreasing school enrollment in most districts.
