Members of the Transportation Committee today discussed ways to come up with $25 million a year to pave rural roads, a conversation that included the possibility of a gas tax increase.

The committee, which will continue meeting this afternoon, is charged with finding a way to put more money toward maintenance surface treatment paving that's scheduled mostly for rural roads.

Rep. George Hogan, D-Old Orchard Beach, said people who live in his area have told him they would support an increase in the gas tax.

"Truly, they all agree if you have to do it, you have to do it," he said.

But Rep. Ken Theriault, D-Madawaska, said his consitutents say they'd rather see a 1 cent increase in the sales tax, not the gas tax.

"The sales tax is where you've got to go," he said.

And Rep. Doug Thomas, R-Ripley, said he doesn't think it's necessary to raise any taxes to come up with the money. He said money can be taken from bridges, highway paving and from other areas to reach a more modest amount for rural paving.

"If we take a little here and a little there, find a little in efficiencies, I think we can find the money," he said.

Enough is enough is enough. All the Highway Bond issues voted and approved the past numerous elections. An already automatic increase in gas tax. Federal stimulus money that the state grabbed off the top to finish their pet repaving projects and the already DOT budget. I also understand that they bought 18 new wheelers this year and they can't pave rural state aid summer roads they are supposed to take care of. Just 295 and major routes. Take a ride on state aid roads...some with, hugh cracks, rocks sticking up through travel lanes, broken up shoulders and how about the grass growing up through the cracks. They need moving now up through the cracks too high. A friend told me that in Cornville, 1/2 half of a transition route (6 miles) from Route 2 to Rt 150 was completed 3 to 4 years ago, with the other half that was not done or finished for about 8 to 9 years.

Enough is enough is enough...especialy for all the excuses in the world.

1) The highway fund has NEVER had more money in it than it does now. This is just a typical political ploy to take advantage of a bad situation to rasie taxes.

2) They should cut the welfare state and move the money to roads if necessary (I'm not even sure that's necessary. See #1 above) Maine is #2 in % of population on welfare in the nation. Dump the freeloaders and don't make our system so attractive that freeloaders from other states come here for the benefits.

3) Have the legislature enact more business friendly policies so that more peopel can pay less taxes and there will be more money to pave roads.

Don't blame me, I voted for TABOR. How about you?

The idea that the highway fund "has NEVER had more money" is misleading and inaccurate, as it does not reflect the increased costs of materials.

It is an urban legend that people come here for "welfare". Statistics do not reflect that. BTW, residency requirements for benefits have been ruled unconstitutional by SCOTUS.

How will lower taxes bring in more money? If I put half as much gas in my car it will not go twice as far.

Would you rather pay a little money now, or a lot more later?

Roads, bridges, ferries, etc. are an important infrastructure components and they all need to be maintained. It costs money to maintain them. Just how do you propose to do it?

Baldacci did say no new taxes. He said nothing about increasing the ones we already have.

I remember when the state was in the liquor business and the state was averaging $28 million a year in net revenue to the general fund. Then the state leased out the liquor business for 10 years for $125 million plus a small commission which was $5.5 million for 2008. Lets do the math: $125 million over 10 years is $12.5 million a year which is less than $28 million a year. But wait. The state got the $125 million 5 years ago so only $5.5 million went into the general fund for 2008 which is much less than the $28 million a year the state was getting. At the legislative hearings the "big wigs" said the state would save millions a year.After 5 years, I am still waiting for the first penny savings.
