AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine motorists will be paying a little more for fuel starting Wednesday.
That's the day the gasoline and diesel fuel taxes rise by 1.1 cent per gallon. The tax is now 28.4 cents-per-gallon for gas and 29.6 cent for diesel. The increase is based on CPI indexing.
There were efforts during this year's legislative session to increase the tax further to address deteriorating road conditions, but they were rejected by lawmakers.
Another new law raises the cost of restoring a suspended driver's license or registration. The fees will rise from $35 to $50 to reinstate a suspended driver's license or vehicle registration.
Beyond raising money, Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap says the change sends a strong message that drivers should behave safely in order to keep their driving privileges intact.

I know the state is paying a high price cpa to balance the books each year. What does he do when a state funky can't add 28.4 and 1.1 and come up witha total of 29.6. I am not a math wiz but when i went to school and in early grade school we were told to add numbers, 28.4 plus 1.1 and came up 29.5 you had a correct answer. 29.6 was a wrong answer. No wonder the state is going broke no one know how to do simple math.
Secretary of State Matthew
Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap says the change sends a strong message. Yeah, If you're having problems with child support, you lose your livelihood and any chance of righting things gets torn from your hands. Good ole republican puke. At least we know who to tar and feather and throw out out of Maine.
Take away my part time job,
Take away my part time job, cut my pension, now raise the price of gas. I guess without a job I won't need any gas. Try to make money now.

I would like to see the fee for reinstatement of a suspended license start at $500 and go up!
I agree right now it is a whisper - not a strong voice at all! It should cost more to get a license reinstated than a night out on the town!

Thank you Maine for taking
Thank you Maine for taking more of my Hard Earned money.. Any more you think you may need ????? I am sure you can think of something....
Marcella don't you think
Marcella don't you think everyone within a 15 to 20 minute drive won't be heading to NH to top off cars, fill gas cans for snowblowers, lawnmowers etc? Prices are a lot cheaper across the border and I know I'll be buying NH gas a whole lot more than I used to.
Maine roads are crap and getting worse every day. 1.1 cent increase or 1.11 increase the State will find a way to squander the funds and not fix the roads.
That's not a "STRONG
That's not a "STRONG message....it is a whisper.

R U SH!TTING ME? A $15.00 increase.....to $50.00?
It should be $500.00.
1.1 Cents? The service
1.1 Cents? The service stations will automatically go up 2 cents and keep the .9 cents. Bright math Augusta, always looking out for the Maine taxpayer NOT!
thanks a bunch , more taxes
thanks a bunch , more taxes just what we need , thats their answer to everything
1.1 cents??? Yeah, THAT'S
1.1 cents??? Yeah, THAT'S gonna get the job done. How about 111 cents? You get what you pay for, and we aren't paying for anything much.
I would also be in favor of MASSIVE fines for OUI's.
Come on . . . 1.1 cents. Who
Come on . . . 1.1 cents. Who in the newsroom decided to call that a "hike" in gas taxes? The roads are crappy because we postpone road repairs to the point that a little fix becomes a huge, expensive project. Drive to NH with gas cans . . . that makes a lot of sense.
I agree with "God" that the cost of getting one's license back after it has been suspended should be much higher. And we need to have much stiffer fees and penalties for driving infractions -- speeding, driving without a license, OUI, etc.
Maybe we need to really
Maybe we need to really stiffen the penalty for suspended drivers. Maybe it should be 100 or 200 bucks instead of 35 or 50 to get the license back. Make getting your license suspended hurt, then maybe people will think twice about the consequences...
More trips to NH with gas
More trips to NH with gas cans and to fill up the vehicle coming right up!
I'm sure that Augusta will find a way to tell us how they still have no money to fix the roads. Wonderful concept they have going. Keep the roads crappy which beats up cars and then add a tax to the labor it takes to fix and keep them on the road.
