Excise tax supporters concede

A bid to cut the municipal excise tax as a way to force towns to trim
spending was defeated by a wide margin.

Supporters of the measure conceded they had lost at 10:05 p.m.

With 22  percent of precincts reporting, the measure was losing 26 percent to 74 percent.

Supporters said they felt the measure had at least raised questions
about the fairness of Maine’s excise tax.

“We’ve now started a conversation that’s not been had before,” said
Chris Cinquemani, a spokesman for the campaign.
