Democrats in the Maine Legislature today called on the U.S. Senate to pass a jobs bill and take other action to provide additional state fiscal relief.
"We know that people and businesses in Maine are hurting," said House Speaker Hannah Pingree, D-North Haven."People are feeling the impact of our budgets. People in small businesses and big businesses are hurting."
Pingree, whose mother represents Maine's 1st Congressional District in Congress, said the Senate needs to pass "the Jobs for Main Street Act of 2010."
Others who spoke said proposed state budget cuts could result in the loss of thousands of jobs in Maine.

Hey here is an idea.....stop
Hey here is an idea.....stop the over taxing of business in Maine and perhaps more jobs will be created.
The most recent example is the new tax on hospitals....Don't they know that the hospitals in this state are the largest employers???
Give business a chance instead of just taxing us with a new job bill. Taxes in this State prohibit job creation....
Bunch of fools in Augusta that think the same way D.C. does....big government will take care of everything.
I searched through all of the
I searched through all of the bills being heard and couldn't find any "new tax on hospitals" being proposed.
Got a link or an LD number we could look up?
Raise corporate income
Raise corporate income taxes. Eliminate lower capital gains taxe rates--treat it as income. Raise the top income tax rate to 65 %.
Joe Jones....taxing does not
Joe Jones....taxing does not create economic stimulus...it only creates incentive for those companies or individuals to keep what little "change" is left.
How about creating the demand for jobs by cutting social services in Maine....no free hand outs and a lot of people would be forced to work for a living....What a novel concept.
didn't they pass a 787
didn't they pass a 787 Billion dollar one last year!
how much is this one going to cost?
First thing Democrats can do,
First thing Democrats can do, is to lower corporate income taxes, reduce state spending, reduce state income tax and cut back some of the strictest environmental regulations they have passed in prior legislation.
That's a jobs bill!
How about we roll back taxes
How about we roll back taxes to what they were under Ronald Reagan. That should make all the Republicans happy, right?
And what are you willing to
And what are you willing to give up in return?
