Deadly force ruled justified in Biddeford shooting

BIDDEFORD -- Attorney General Janet T. Mills ruled today that Biddeford Police Sgt. Jeffrey Greene was legally justified when he shot and killed Barbara Stewart outside her Main Street home in March.

A review of the case by the attorney general established that the 47-year-old Stewart called police on the night of March 24 and told a dispatcher that she was going to kill herself or someone else. She also told police she had a gun.

When the officers arrived, Stewart was holding what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol. Stewart pointed the gun at the officers and moved toward them.

She refused several orders to drop the weapon, prompting Greene to fire three rounds. She was pronounced dead at a Biddeford hospital.

The investigation determined that Stewart was armed with a silver and black pellet air pistol designed to shoot .177 caliber pellets. The pistol is similar in appearance and configuration to a semi-automatic pistol.

Police later found a handwritten suicide note in her apartment.

Ran into a situation with a teenager at the top of a landing at an apartment, when he swung the gun towards me.  It didn't look quite right, and I barricaded behind a wall rather than shoot.  Yep, another one of those .177 pellet pistols.  He dropped it after several commands.

Snow, you are perhaps the

Snow, you are perhaps the most ignorant poster, well next to Read of Boston and CFairer.  Skowreader nailed it.  You obviously have issues.  Thankfully, those who review these cases aren't as ignorant as you.  You seem to think we are out their just to take abuse of fools like you.  Sounds like she got what she wanted.  My heart goes out to her family, AND the officer who will live with this for the rest of his life.

I wonder what the cop would have done if she was holding a plastic spork from KFC.  Shoot her with his shot gun?

Another Cop can retire now.  He joined the force to leagally kill someone.  I hope he got his thrills because the girls kids lost one

of their toys and she aint around to buy them another one.

SiameseCats, you are wrong.

SiameseCats, you are wrong. You have much less than seconds to make that decision.

Try being a police officer

Try being a police officer and having a gun aimed at you.  You have a matter of seconds to decide what to do.   Unless you have been in that situation you have no judgement of the incident.

shame on police-and bless her
