GRAHAM YELLS: Elaine Graham, of Farmington, left, yells in the hallway after being escorted out of a Judiciary Committee work session on the same sex marriage bill Tuesday afternoon at The Statehouse in Augusta. Rep. Seth Berry, D-Bowdoinham at right, who had been standing beside her in the doorway walked her out of the hearing room.
The Legislature’s Judiciary Committee voted 11-2-1 today in support of a bill to allow gay marriage in Maine.
Eleven members voted in favor of the bill, two voted against it, and one voted to send it to referendum.
The vote was briefly interrupted when a woman began yelling at legislators because she wanted them to reject the bill. Elaine Graham of Farmington was escorted from the Statehouse by Capitol Police, but will not face charges.
The bill will now move forward to the full Senate for consideration.

I am sure most of people of
I am sure most of people of Maine do not want to see what they doing. Hide someplace, not on public. Oh, their are babies. After same methods of divorce then disgush. cOugh up...
It's funny that when
It's funny that when something doesn't turn out the way YOU want it to you that's when people begin to complain that the decisions in the hand of only a few "easily-influenced people" (exactly, they're "easily influenced" by the masses they represent that support the bill). If you have a problem with this way of doing things, sorry but you better take up a much bigger cause to change a protocol that's been in place for a REALLY long time.
Honestly it's hard to believe that people base their opinions on such outdated ideology. Grow up and think for yourselves or we'll all suffer.
Gotta love the Bible
Gotta love the Bible thumpers. They put all their stock in the oldest book of fiction known to man. Except maybe the Koran.
Please call your state
Please call your state representatives immediately and tell them you want to be allowed to make this decision for yourselves. Tell them they can't get away with trying to silence the voters of Maine. Tell them you want to be able to vote on this issue and not have it forced on you against your will. Seriously, if you don't call them immediately they'll think they can get away with this nonsense! They have to know that the people of Maine don't want gay marriage. They know this because in every state where voters have been allowed to vote on this issue they have said no to gay marriage. It will be no different here. LET THE VOTERS OF MAINE CHOOSE!
I am glad that we live in a
I am glad that we live in a society where we are free to post our feelings. Sure, there are many that will agree to disagree. But isn't that the beauty of this country. I thank God that I am able to live in this country. I served for this country and it has given me every opportunity, and all I had to do was grab it if I wanted to. Congratulations to those seeking this bill to pass, you have passed another hurdle, I applaud you for your perservance, patience, and motivation.
On the other hand, I too will do all that I can legally do to stop this bill as it is my right to do this. Whatever your or my convictions are, I am thankful that we can debate this in an open forum without fear of reciprocity from Big Brother.
As I have visited many other countries, they do not have such opportunities. And we should be thankful for that. Good luck in your continued pursuit, as I hope that you would feel the same, without derision or vehemence.
You have got to be joking!
You have got to be joking! Please DO NOT let these legislators silence the voters of Maine by not allowing a vote on gay marriage. This should be Ythe people's choice and not that of a small, easily-influenced group of seven people to decide for the whole state.
Please, call your state representative and state senator immediately and demand that they NOT silence the people of Maine on this issue and that they let us vote on whether or not Maine should appropve same-sex marriage. Better yet, tell them NO on same-sex 'marriage.'
Seriously, if they don't hear from you, they'll think they can get away with this nonsense against the wishes of the voters just like they did in Iowa! How stupid would it be to let this happen here? That would be just wrong, to put it mildly. If the voters of Maine want gay marriage, let them vote to approve it, but don't let it be forced on the entire state by the legislature.
Please do make those calls starting tomorrow, and don't stop until either they allow this issue to be voted on or until it's completely dropped!
You've inspired me. I shall
You've inspired me.
I shall call my representative and senator tomorrow morning to commend the committee for its work and urge them both to support this bill.
To be clear: i had no previous plans to do so. But after reading your arrogant spew about "we the people" and what they want, i realize it's of essential importance to make it clear that every windbag that purports to speak for the entire population needs at least one rational someone countering them.
Really, just accept that not everyone is always going to agree with you...even the government. However, if the majority of people elect a body that agree to enact laws some don't like, perhaps you all should at least consider the idea that the weak link in the equation is just maybe not the voters, governor, legislature, senate and committee?
Remember well the destruction
Remember well the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
God is NOT MOCKED!
He will judge Maine as He has judged the United States.
AIDS is a plague from the Most High God upon the Sodomites, so it is now, and it will only grow worse.
The sin of the men of Sodom is plainly connected to their homosexuality. There is no doubt the Bible declares homosexual conduct is sin (Romans 1:26-28).
i. The Bible condemns homosexuality in the same context as it condemns incest and bestiality (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13). If we ignore the word of God at the point of homosexual conduct, then we have no standing to say any of the other three sins are sin.
ii. Homosexual advocates have an interest in saying homosexuals are exactly like everyone else, except they love people of their own sex. But when the conduct of homosexuals is observed, this is not the case.
iii. We can bring out statistics on the number of partners homosexuals have: 43% of homosexuals say they have had 500 or more sexual partners in their lifetime. Only 1% of homosexuals say they have had four or less sexual partners in their lifetime. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, 77% of homosexuals say they have met sexual partners in a city park, 62% in a homosexual bar, 61% in a theater, 31% in a public restroom. Only 28% of homosexuals said they had known their partners for at least a week before participating in homosexual sex.
iv. Undoubtedly, one of the reasons why males pursue and give in to homosexual desires is because they want to immerse themselves in a lifestyle of dangerous sex with no inhibitions or obstacles, and sense that sex with other men is an easier path to this. No wonder Paul connects “burning lust” and a debased mind with male homosexuality in Romans 1:27-28.
v. Homosexuals also have an interest in saying that up to 10% of the population is homosexual. But the most reliable statistics show only 2.3% of men in their 20’s and 30’s report ever having had a homosexual experience. Only 1.1% reported being exclusively homosexual. These low figures agree with several other recent surveys and surveys done in Britain and France.
vi. Homosexuals also have an interest in saying they were “born that way.” All attempts thus far to prove this have been based more on wishful thinking than solid biological research, but if it is found to be the case, so what? The Bible teaches we are all born with a predisposition to sin. It shouldn’t surprise us that some 2% of the population finds this predisposition expressed in homosexual desire.
vii. Homosexuals also have an interest in defining themselves as “gay,” a word that used to mean “happy” or “carefree,” but it is a poor description of a lifestyle that has such a high rate of death, disease, and suicide.
so just keep living your life
so just keep living your life in accordance with the Bible (and i hope you follow ALL the rules so that Jesus and St. Peter don't label you a hypocrite because they hate hypocites), and let the higher powers judge others.
ok, then i will remind you
ok, then i will remind you that Matthew 7 said:
1
Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Mk. 4.24
3
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
6
¶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
I would like to point out
I would like to point out that PatrickHenry has used statistics from Dr. Paul Cameron's "Medical Consequences of What Homosexuals Do". Dr. Cameron, chairman of the Family Research Institute, was investigated by the American Psychological Association and subsequently expelled for misrepresenting the findings of others and employing unsound methodologies. He has been censured by numerous professional organizations, including the American Sociological Association (The American Sociological Association officially and publicly states that Paul Cameron is not a sociologist, and condemns his consistent misrepresentation of sociological research) and the Canadian Psychological Association (The Canadian Psychological Association takes the position that Dr. Paul Cameron has consistently misinterpreted and misrepresented research on sexuality, homosexuality, and lesbianism and thus, it formally disassociates itself from the representation and interpretations of scientific literature in his writings and public statements on sexuality). I'm sure that PatrickHenry believed these statistics to be truthful, but he has been misled by an organization that will lie to promote its cause - not very Christian. I strongly encourage people to research Dr. Cameron and find out for themselves.
More importantly, not all of our society is Christian and many of those are not practicing. Subjecting all of us to the laws of your church is un-American.
You'll have no trouble
You'll have no trouble providing links to support all the stats that you claim. Begin with the "43% of homosexuals say..."
I'll wait.
Thank you to the committee
Thank you to the committee for voting in favor of same-sex marriages. I have known many gay and lesbian couples in love and committed to each other, and I cannot see how they can be denied this right under the law. To the religious folks out there quoting scripture, although I respect your faith and beliefs I strongly believe you're missing the forest for the trees. I left the church for that very reason. If these folks are in a committed relationship and want to pledge their life and their heart to the other, isn't that way more important than some questionable biblical interpretation about homosexuality? Maybe more importantly, as a life long Mainer I have learned many a lesson from old-timers about tolerance, acceptance and inclusion. Let's keep THAT tradition alive!
This law provides no special
This law provides no special "rights" to any group. What it is providing is equality. This bill does not give a gay couple the right to marry in a church that does not wish to recognize that marriage. It allows a religious institution to maintain its doctrine with no interference from gov't and allows the gov't to grant gay couples the privilege to marry and obtain the "legal" benefits the law allows any married couple.
Gay people exist and their marrying is not going to change anything in your church. Just as it changed nothing in your church while they were single. If it does, maybe you need to find a new church whose doctrine is more stable and in line with you own beliefs.
For those wishing to deny anyone the equality and quality of life we all are entitled to under the Declaration of Independence and the US and Maine Constitutions, I include a quote from Martin Niemoeller, a Protestant pastor, anti-communist and early supporter of the Nazi Party before Hitler made the church subordinate to state authority. He would be confined in a concentration camp from 1938-1945 for speaking out against Hitler and Nazi policies.
“First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.”
Our freedom gives us the right to disagree and to have an opinion, but this bill is perfect in that it grants equal privilege without infringing on the rights of others. A Democracy should never "concentrate" law abiding citizens even if we do not agree with who they are and how to act (see Salem Witch trials). If so, could ANY one of us be next? If so, who will speak for us?

Many "marriages" today are
Many "marriages" today are not religious. This issue would be much simpler if they called it civil unions, which is how the government actually sees marriage anyway when it comes to taxation. Also, there was a good observation about married vs single when it comes to taxation. Why should there be any difference unless there are kids involved as dependents?

Yeah, so what happened to the
Yeah, so what happened to the separation of Chuch and State??? The State issues "marriage licenses" to two people. Not religion. How can religion tell the state who they can issue a license to based on their beliefs? That would be the "Church" telling the "State" what they can or cannot do. That would be WRONG. The State is not supposed to be regulated by the Church. If marriage is a religious thing, why are non-religious people allowed to marry? No one has ever fought that. Religion hasn't fought the State over having to obtain licenses. Two people of different religions getting married in one Church or the other? Absurd! But they do it. And why do married couples get a break from the federal government on their taxes? Because they are religious? Ha! That is discrimination. Until any two consenting adults are allowed to marry there should be no more tax breaks for married couples just because of their "religious" ceremony. Note the sarcasm...

From a statement issued by
From a statement issued by Janet (née Reno) Napolitano of the Department of Homeland Security in the year 2010 concerning the language utilized by extremist Christian terrorist groups…
It is hereby mandated that all right-wing terrorist groups refrain from using certain labels, slurs and terms of disparagement once popularly accepted but now considered pejorative and in strict violation of government policy, e.g.: the custom of implying ‘perverse’ sexual behavior to CITOYENNES or groups of CITOYENNES of the same GENDER MODALITY , denigrating them as “Homosexuals”, “Gays” (pre-CLN context), “Lesbians”, “Sodomites”— and/or worse; the vilification of Abortion (archaic) and Euthanasia — vis à vis the efficacy of pro-choice and mandated SABBATICALS — as acts of “Infanticide” and “Murder”; and the disenfranchisement of popularly accepted world-view philosophies, such as Paganism, Satanism and Witchcraft, as reprehensible, cultic alternatives to Christianity.
All of you who say that
All of you who say that keeping gay marriage illegal is protecting the "sanctity and spirituality" of marriage are simply downright hypocrites. Until being religious is a requirement of getting married, (need I remind you that there are many, many straight couples who are atheist or agnostic and get married?), I see no viable argument whatsoever that gay marriage should remain outlawed. Marriage between heterosexual couples has its own already existing issues (check the national divorce rates, people) so to make the crass assumption that homosexual marriage will ruin marriage in general is simply unfounded. To assume that homosexuals are devoid of any and all morals, ethics, and ability to function as anything other than hedonistic barbarians is beyond ludicrous. Those who oppose gay marriage are not being asked to endorse it, accept it, or even like it. Rather, the issue is that homosexuals are asking the State for the same rights afforded to those who are heterosexual and married. To insist your view on those who are homosexual is no different than those who insisted their views of segregation on the black population or the rights of women to do, well, just about anything. For a country that was FOUNDED on RELIGIOUS FREEDOM OF CHOICE, the banning of such things as homosexual marriage only reinforce the growing trend in the U.S. that if you don't identify with an traditional organized religion or believe in God, you are an immoral social reject. What goes on in the bedrooms of homosexuals is none of your business, just as what goes on in yours is none of theirs. Lest those who are free from sin cast the first stone...only God himself can (or rather, is expected to) judge us.

If this bill becomes law I dare you to you to to put it on your job application "I will not hire a "married" same sex couple."

The large Maine law firm that handles my business has no doubt I would prevail.
ptk -- you know that this
ptk -- you know that this discrimination you speak of is illegal even if the bill doesn't pass -- right? and why is it that you feel you can pick and choose which parts of the bible suit your own narrow-minded beliefs? i mean, while the bible does promote heterosexuality as being the more favored option than homosexuality, i sincerely hope you are not shaving, not sharing a bed with a woman while she is menstruating, not eating shellfish, and not working at your "rather large business" on sundays, since the bible is also very clear about that. of course, it's also really clear that you should love your neighbor as thyself -- and there were never any exceptions regarding this. it is people like you that make me glad that i gave up organized religion -- catholicism in particular. do not get me wrong -- i did not give up religion -- but i refuse to be present while it becomes a vehicle for intolerance and inequality (which i am fairly certain that jesus hated). if the populace can vote to ban gay marriage one year, why should they not be able to switch sides years down the road? and why is it that the opponents always bring in their religion and their constitutional freedom of it while at the same time ignoring the separation of church and state?

So your business doesn't have a name and neither does your attorney. Interesting.
The acceptance of difference
The acceptance of difference among people, and religions, is a long and winding road. Galileo was censured for believing that there were other planets etc in space --- people are now censured for believing that abortion is a viable option, people with disabilities are thought, by some, to be a curse and there are more instances than I could cite in a book. Acceptance and tolerance either follow the "road to Hell" or follow the road toward civilization. But --- if you love your neighbor (as the Christian commandments say you should) why not leave your neighbor alone to make personal decisions. And, "Mr. I Own A Big Business" your type doesn't promote real dialogue with threats of more bigotry. I prefer to believe that civilization, civility, and civil rights go hand in hand.
I own a busniess, in
I own a busniess, in waterville although i am not in favor of the bill i would still hire a same sex partner if they were quailfied.. I have a friend who is gay and agree with what some of the things he says.. I also on the other hand feel likes its an individual's choice i choose to be married to a woman thats my choice...
MudDoctor...Are you serious?
MudDoctor...Are you serious? LAST form of bigotry????? This will create more hate crimes as homosexuals begin to flaunt themselves even more than they do now; being straight and white will be the minority, and NOT tolerated because tolerance only works one way for the homosexuals...they are NOT tolerant of anyone who even remotely APPEARS to be against them or different! This will flood courts with "discrimination" et al lawsuits. Do you live in the same bubble as our Judiciary Committee does? And for all you "Equality" people out there...don't any of you even pretend to think you are a Christian if you believe this is God's definition of tolerance and love; stop co-opting Biblical language to suit your causes(s). He did not tolerate this with Sodom and Gomorrah and He won't tolerate it now, legalizing this will not make it right or even morally correct. May God have mercy on all of your souls! You'll need it!
Bang that Bible a little
Bang that Bible a little harder why don't ya'. I suppose you'd like to round up all the non-believers and convert them? It worked reall well when we did it to the Native Americans, right?
how about making civil unions
how about making civil unions a government thing and marriage a religious thing... those who get married will also have a government recognized civil union. will that be enough for homosexuals?
Marriage it not a right, by the way. Also it was originally a religious union until the gov't stepped in. What happened to seperation of church and state? Is it only valid when the church oversteps its bounds?
That's gay....
