Burned bodies believed to be mother and son

State investigators believe the two bodies found in a burning car in Gorham on Wednesday are those of a mother and her son from Windham.

The 2006 Toyota Highlander is registered to a Windham family, and the bodies inside were of a male and female, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

Officials have interviewed other family members and have taken DNA samples from the family home in order to make a positive identification. Police are not prepared to release the names publicly, McCausland said.

McCausland did not disclose the age of the mother, and described the son as a pre-teen.

McCausland had no comment on what might have started the fire, or the causes of death of the victims. He said officials continue to analyze evidence collected from the Highlander.
