Arrest in Augusta, Hallowell, Gardiner bank robberies

AUGUSTA — Police have arrested a man from New York they say is responsible for holding up a Western Avenue bank this week and four other area banks in the past nine months.

Augusta police arrested Paul Rivera, 43, Friday and charged him with three Augusta bank robberies, said Detective Sgt. Matt Clark of the Augusta Police.

Rivera is being held at the Kennebec County Jail on $250,000 cash bail.

Rivera also is expected to face charges for bank robberies in Hallowell and Gardiner.
