Tech Dawn: When the internet beckons before the bathroom

If the New York Times is to be believed, the first stop after hitting the alarm in the morning is not the bathroom nor the coffee maker. It's the smartphone or the laptop.

Shocking? Probably not, but still, let us delve deeper:

"Technology has shaken up plenty of life’s routines, but for many people it has completely altered the once predictable rituals at the start of the day.

This is morning in America in the Internet age. After six to eight hours of network deprivation — also known as sleep — people are increasingly waking up and lunging for cellphones and laptops, sometimes even before swinging their legs to the floor and tending to more biologically urgent activities." - "Coffee Can Wait. Day’s First Stop Is Online." NYT, 8/10/09

As far as trend stories go, this one may not be a shocker, but it's not quite a thud either. Instead of some faddish new swing, you could argue that the daily routine has been irreversibly changed by technology.

But instead of framing the central question of the story as "why are more people getting wired first thing in the morning" maybe we should ask what is the cumulative effect of starting the day the BlackBerry way?

Thanks to the story we at least know the American family has become even more fragmented thanks to the Facebooks and the iPhones and the Twitters. While we already know different members of the family are plugged into different networks (work for mom and dad, Facebook for the kids), NYT writer Brad Stone does a good job showing how adding a little social networking and e-mails can clog up the morning.

But I found a couple anecdotes odd:

"The Gudes’ sons sleep with their phones next to their beds, so they start the day with text messages in place of alarm clocks. Mr. Gude, an instructor at Michigan State University, sends texts to his two sons to wake up.

'We use texting as an in-house intercom,' he said. 'I could just walk upstairs, but they always answer their texts.'"

Also, this:

"In May, Gabrielle Glaser of Montclair, N.J., bought her 14-year-old daughter, Moriah, an Apple laptop for her birthday. In the weeks after, Moriah missed the school bus three times and went from walking the family Labradoodle for 20 minutes each morning to only briefly letting the dog outside."

Wait...huh? Is this a technology issue, or is it a parenting issue? Not that I want to be the childless ranter throwing stones, but are the parents here letting the tech enable bad habits?

And that gets to a broader question worth examining: Is technology feeding the needs we already have or enabling new habits? Are iPhones, BlackBerrys, Facebook, Twitter and necessities or are we making them necessary?

In the last five years I've gone from a simple two-tone flip phone barely capable of texing to a BlackBerry and an iPhone. And with each phone my habits have changed. And that makes this confession time: Yes, I check my e-mail in the early AM. But typically after I've tended to other important "duties."

Did I need to do that, or did having a phone that allows me to glance for important e-mails make me feel the need?

Perhaps technology has become so subversive thanks to a sneaky and seductive ease of use. Consider what happens when someone tries to go on a "digital diet" and disconnect their life from their tech. On the "prone to violent thoughts" scale "digital diet" probably ranks close to "recently quit smoking" or "wife of adulterous politician."

But I digress. Whether it's our own need, or the needs our gadgets makes us feel, it could be a chicken or egg debate. (With a helping of "how connected is too connected" on the side.). But it seems like a logical question to ask why we let our tech change our lives if we really have reached a point where you have to check for text before you relieve yourself.

My favorite people (seriously) are those that will turn off their cell phone's ring instead of interrupting their conversation with someone. With call waiting and texting and all the demands we've allowed on ourselves, we've become an ungracious and self-absorbed society.

 

(Toss in a nice EMP or random denial-of-service attack and watch the techbots fibrillate in frustration, deprived of digital stimulation.)

 

Undeniably technology enables new habits, that's a no-brainer. And social networks may help reinforce social stratification, with younger people fleeing to fresh sites as their parents migrate to their current ones. But it's also providing a way to reconnect with our past and far-flung friends and family in an increasingly mobile and atomic society.
